KATHMANDU: Nepali migrant workers living illegally in Malaysia are able to return home without any hassle till the end of 2021.
Second Secretary at the Nepali Embassy in Malaysia Yasu Basnet said illegal Nepalis returning home now on can go directly to the airport with their passports or travel documents and air tickets. The earlier obligation of making an appointment through an online system created by the Immigration Department of Malaysia has been removed, she added.
According to Secretary Basnet, illegal Nepalis ought to reach the airport with a negative PCR report for coronavirus, hotel quarantine paper for Nepal if they not vaccinated against the virus in Malaysia and certificate of vaccination if they are vaccinated. They also need to reach the airport 24 hours before leaving for Nepal.
The fine of 500 ringgit to be submitted to the Malaysian Immigration Department can be paid through credit card, debit card or touch and go card, she said, adding that no cash transactions are allowed.
Those not having a passport can obtain a travel permit from the Nepali Embassy in Malaysia by submitting a copy of citizenship, a copy of old passport, two passport-size color photographs and 160 Malaysian ringgit fee.
Stating that this provision is valid until December 31, 2021, Secretary Basnet urged the Nepali migrants working in Malaysia illegally to take advantage of the opportunity and return home in time.
The deadline for illegal migrants to return home under Malaysia’s recalibration program expired on June 30. However, the Malaysian government extended the deadline until December 31, 2021, at the request of Nepali Embassy there.
As many as 88,034 illegal foreign workers have returned to their homeland so far under Malaysia’s ‘recalibration’ program for illegal workers, while more than 1,07,524 foreign workers are still in the process of returning.
