Increasing Road Accidents in Nepal

Accidents on the road have become more dangerous in recent years. According to the World Health Organization, vehicle accidents kill the lives of around 1.3 million people each year.

Non-fatal injuries affect between 20 and 50 million more people, with many of them becoming disabled as a result of their injuries.

Despite having 60% of the world’s vehicles, low- and middle-income countries account for 93 percent of road fatalities, according to the World Health Organization. For children and young people aged 5–29 years, road traffic injuries are the main cause of death.

Some of the causes of road accidents are exceeding the speed limit excessively, driving Under the influence of alcohol, distractions for drivers include, seat belts and helmets not being worn; non-compliance with lane markings and improper overtaking.

Over speeding is the cause of the majority of road accidents in Nepal. Vehicle drivers are constantly competing to carry more passengers.

As a result, they try to compete with them, resulting in accidents. Every day, we hear about car accidents in the news. Pedestrians are hit by vehicles in many of the stories we hear.

From May 17 to 23, 2021, the United Nations hosted the 6th Global Road Safety Week. The week’s goals were to get national and municipal policy pledges to implement 30 km/h speed limits and zones in urban areas, as well as to build local support for such low-speed measures.

Similarly, not wearing a seat belt or wearing a helmet is the second leading cause of accidents. If they observe someone driving without a seat belt, traffic police now issue fines.

They follow the regulations when they observe traffic; otherwise, they avoid it. People believe that the laws and regulations are for the benefit of others.

According to the Metropolitan Traffic Police Office, 9545 traffic accidents occurred throughout the country during the fiscal year 077/078. There were 166 road fatalities.

The number of road accidents in the country is increasing as a result of carelessness and overspeeding. The number of accidents in the fiscal year 049/50 was 1945, which has grown in the current fiscal year.

Even the traffic police organize several initiatives aimed at the general population in order to reduce the number of road accidents. To reduce traffic accidents, they stage skits, design new slogans, and place dummies with notes on the road.

From May 17 to 23, 2021, the United Nations hosted the 6th Global Road Safety Week. The week’s goals were to get national and municipal policy pledges to implement 30 km/h speed limits and zones in urban areas, as well as to build local support for such low-speed measures.

Due to the increasing number of road accidents, we must drive with great caution. Wear your seatbelt at all times, follow the speed limit, stay in your own lane, and wear helmets when riding a bike, among other things.

Similarly, the United Nations General Assembly has set a high goal of reducing the global number of road traffic fatalities and injuries by 2030.

In Nepal, strong rules and regulations are required to reduce traffic accidents. People will not be able to concentrate effectively while driving if there are no strong laws and regulations in place.

There used to be a problem with people not staying in their lanes. However, in order to mitigate this, there was a rule requiring compensation, which has resulted in the problem being reduced today.

Similarly, public awareness videos regarding traffic accidents should be produced, including the reasons and solutions. Also, after passing the difficult trial exams, the most important thing is to provide the license. we can control these issues by being self-aware of accidents.

Similarly, traffic lights should be present to encourage drivers to be more disciplined and to allow pedestrians to cross the street safely. To monitor and view what is happening on the road, a CCTV camera should be installed.

Due to the increasing number of road accidents, we must drive with great caution. Wear your seatbelt at all times, follow the speed limit, stay in your own lane, and wear helmets when riding a bike, among other things.

The greatest approach to avoid a road accident is to make sure you’re following all of the rules that are in place to keep you safe. After all, we only have one life to live.
