KATHMANDU: Various hilly and mountainous districts of Nepal have been blanketed with snowfall.

Dolpa has witnessed snowfall for the first time this winter. Most parts of the district have been blanketed by the snowfall that started on Thursday night.

Dejected by the dryness of the season until the beginning of February, the snowfall and rain have now brought cheers to the farmers.

“With the snowfall, winter crops which were wilted due to the dryness of the season have got a new lease of life,” said a local.

If the snowfall occurs in the winter, it will help invaluable herbs including yarsagumba grow abundantly, said Prem Bahadur Lama, a local.

“The more snowfall, the better for the farmers. The snowfall does good to winter crops and it will also yield yarsagumba abundantly in the highlands,” said Lama.

Almost 90 percent of Dolpa including Dunai, Tripurakot, and Tribeni has been blanketed by the snow.

On the other hand, the daily life of people has been affected by the biting cold. People have been forced to stay indoors, being unable to find fodders for their cattle.

Meanwhile, passengers have been stranded at Juphal airport due to lack of flights, with the snowfall. The temperature of Dolpa has plummeted to minus 10 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, snowfall that continued since Thursday night has thrown life out of gear in and around Humla.

As a result, flights to and from Nepalgunj and Surkhet airports as well as food supplies have been disrupted, said Chief District Officer Chiranjibi Giri.
