KATHMANDU: The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center is going to hold ‘Remembering Kashi’ in memory of Nepalis who lived in the ancient city of Kashi on Tuesday. The program will be broadcast live through ‘Sampark Bharat Nepal’ Facebook page from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm.
Nepali Congress General Secretary Dr. Shashank Koirala, writer Durga Prasad Shrestha, Kiran Manandhar and others will participate in the program. Moderator Ila Sharma will discuss experience and memories of these prominent personalities of having lived in Kashi.
‘Reminiscing Kashi’ is the first in the series, ‘Reminiscing My Alma Mater’ – a program of nostalgic trips down memory lane of some eminent Nepalis out of hundreds of thousands who studied in different Universities across India. The series focuses on memories of Nepalis, who have called the ancient city of Kashi, a home away from home.
While Nepal’s association with Kashi – pravaas began centuries ago, ‘Reminiscing Kashi’ re-lives memories spanning the decades between 1920s to 1980s – the decades when this city was a vibrant hub of Nepali diaspora – for revolutionary thinking, politics, religion, pilgrimage, education, publication, trade.
It was a refuge for widows, for the elderly in their twilight years awaiting death, for young people aspiring for education, for political exiles escaping the oppressive Rana regime. This place shaped sensibilities of Nepali diaspora and ultimately of Nepali society thus contributing to Nepal’s cultural and political evolution. The city continues to be a focal point of shared culture and affection between Nepal and India.
Sampark Bharat Nepal is an initiative to bring together lakhs of Nepalis who have received education in India who are now spread all over Nepal. This platform seeks to develop intellectual, cultural and social cooperation among the alumni through greater interaction and activities.
