KATHMANDU: Journalist Rupa Sunar has filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court (SC) demanding Education Minister Krishna Gopal Shrestha’s dismissal alleging him of promoting cate-based discrimination.

According to SC sources, Sunar filed the petition against Minister Shrestha on Sunday.

Some days ago, Sunar had filed a complaint at the police against Saraswati Pradhan, a house owner at Babarmahal, Kathmandu, claiming Pradhan denied her a flat on the basis of caste (for being a Dalit).

Sunar said that Pradhan who had agreed to let her rent the flat had later changed her words after knowing Sunar belonged to ‘dalit’ community.

Subsequently, police had arrested Pradhan for investigation, but Shrestha had put pressure on the police  and got her released on the third day of the arrest.

Hence, Sunar now demands Shrestha be punished for committing an offence as per the Caste-based Discrimination and Untouchability Act.

“Shrestha influenced the investigation into such a serious case like caste-based discrimination by abusing authority, he should be dismissed from the position,” she demanded in the writ.
