KATHMANDU: Nepal Telecom has urged service users to be aware of misleading information presenting various offers in the name of the company and doing rounds on social media of late.

The telecom urged users to avoid misleading information, purporting cheap data packs of Nepal Telecom and enticing users to click links to get the pack only to reveal imprtant information of customers, especially during the prohibitory period. Nepal Telecom also issued a notice urging caution on Thursday.

Telecom spokesperson Rajesh Joshi said that there is a possibility of fraud if such misleading information is pursued. He also requested not to click on such information and links.

“This is called phishing and some are carrying out such activities by making fake social media pages in the name of Nepal Telecom,” Spokesperson Joshi told KhabarHub. “Such activities are not in telecom’s hand, they may not be possible to stop. There is a high possibility of fraud. So users ought to be aware.”

He said any new offer and new plans of Nepal Telecom would be updated in the official page and website of the telecom, requesting users to open the official page ‘Nepal Telecom’ or the website of Nepal Telecom to get the necessary information, including services and facilities of the telecom.

When do customers fall prey to fake offers?

When consumers are unaware of the official page of Nepal Telecom, they are more likely to be deceived when they believe in an offer from a page that looks exactly the same.

Today a fake page written Nepal_Telcome on social media (picture above) was found to have misled customers by sponsoring various offers using the logo of Nepal Telecom. The fake page had various offers and the page and its fake offers were even ‘boosted’ to expand their reach.

As the boosted content reaches Facebook unwary users directly, they are more likely to be cheated.

The above post reads, ‘Now you can get 10 GB of internet for free. Click on “get offer” to subscribe.’

Nepal Telecom has requested not to believe in offers and information coming from other than the official page, saying that clicking on the offers on Facebook will increase the possibility of fraud.

Many such Facebook pages have been found to be fraudulent.
