Lumbini Chief Minister Pokharel resigns

BUTWAL: Lumbini Chief Minister (CM) Shankar Pokharel has resigned from the post.

CM Pokharel stepped down to pave the way for forming a new government in the Province.

Pokhrel submitted his resignation to Lumbini state chief Dharmanath Prasad Yadav on Sunday, according to a source.

It is said that Pokhrel resigned to pave the way for the formation of a new government as the current legal situation was different when the state government was formed.

His resignation comes hours before a special session of the Lumbini Provincial Assembly was called to decide on the no-confidence motion against him.

The no-confidence motion against Chief Minister Pokhrel in the Provincial Assembly Secretariat was said to be tabled in today’s meeting.

As many as 41 lawmakers from the Nepali Congress, Maoist Center, and Janata Samajwadi Party had registered the no-confidence motion in the state assembly secretariat on April 19.

“The resignation of Chief Minister Shankar Pokharel has been accepted by Provincial Chief Dharma Nath Yadav as per Article 169 (1) (a),” according to a statement issued by the Office of the Provincial Chief.

Meanwhile, the provincial chief has assigned CM Pokhrel to lead the provincial government until a government is formed as per the constitution.
