KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called for an immediate release of State Counsellor of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi.

Issuing a statement on Monday, the Ministry said that it was concerned about the safety and wellbeing of the detained civilian leaders including President U Win Myint and State Counsellor Suu Kyi, and called for their immediate release.

“Nepal has been closely following the recent developments in Myanmar. We believe that all parties involved will respect the will of the Myanmar people and hope that the democratic and constitutional process will be restored soon,” it added.

Myanmar’s military arrested top political leaders and government officials including President Mint and leader Suu Kyi and declared a one-year-long state of emergency on Monday morning.

After the completion of the election and before the first post-election parliamentary session started in Myanmar, the army arrested the leaders on Monday and declared the government unsuccessful.

After the army-backed party saw poor performance in the election, the army had accused the government of rigging in the election.
