NA Chairman Timilsina objects to sending back CC’s nominations for parliamentary hearing

KATHMANDU: National Assembly (NA) Chairman Ganesh Timilsina has objected to Speaker Agni Sapkota’s decision to send back the recommendation of the Constitutional Council (CC).

The Speaker had on Sunday returned the letter sent by the council for the purpose of submitting it to the Parliamentary Hearing Committee for appointment to various constitutional posts.

The National Assembly Chairman expressed his objection at a press conference on Monday, reminding that the federal parliament is not unicameral.

He said that the House of Representatives and the National Assembly have equal status.

Saying that the Parliamentary Hearing Committee is a joint committee of the House of Representatives and the National Assembly, Timilsina insists that the Speaker alone cannot make a decision.

The council meeting held on December 15, 2020, had nominated various persons for 45 vacant positions at constitutional bodies.

Speaker Sapkota sent back the recommendations arguing that the hearing cannot be conducted as the House has been dissolved.

The CC had then recommended Prem Kumar Rai as the Chief of the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA).

Likewise, the former Nepal Police AIG Kishor Kumar Silwal and Jaya Kumar Chand were recommended as CIAA Commissioners.
