KATHMANDU: The government is mulling to provide a 50 percent daily allowance to police personnel deployed to combat the spread of COVID-19.

On a request from Nepal Police Headquarters, the Ministry of Home Affairs is preparing to provide the allowance to the security personnel directly involved to ward off COVID-19.

Some 30,000 police personnel have been currently deployed to ward off COVID-19 spread.

A meeting among Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa, Home Secretary Maheswor Neupane, Nepal Police IGP Thakur Prasad Gyawali and other high-ranking police officials on Sunday decided to that end.

The government has already decided to provide a 100 percent allowance to health workers and 75 percent allowance to the technical team deployed to combat COVID-19.

According to sources at Nepal Police Headquarters, IGP Gyawali had been requesting the Ministry to provide an allowance in a bid to boost the morale of police personnel.
