KATHMANDU: Learning activities of 64.3 percent children under the alternative teaching-learning method have been affected due to various reasons amid ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, according to a study.
As a result, experts warn that it would have a long-term impact on education. The study with the theme of ‘COVID-19 impact on public schools of Nepal’ was carried out at local levels of all seven provinces by the National Campaign for Education Nepal.
A total of 335 parents, 350 students and 85 headmasters participated in the study.
According to the study, there were inadequate trainings on alternative teaching-learning method to teachers.
Only 25 percent schools of the districts where the study was carried out except Chitwan assisted children under the teaching-learning method.
Except Parsa, 94 percent parents said they did not receive parental education, the members of the study said.
Likewise, 75 to 100 percent students did not receive other educational materials although they got textbooks.
Sixty to 92 percent headmasters and teachers did not reach out to the community with the teaching-learning method although they had a plan to promote it.
Similarly, 50 to 75 percent children involved in self-study at home under the guidance of parents and guidelines and 60 to 91 percent lacked medium of teaching-learning method like internet, radio, television, mobile and computer.
Dr Suresh Gautam, Dr Indra Mani Rai, Sanam Maskey, Rajendra Pahari and Janak Panta involved in carrying the study involving online survey with students of grades 4, 8 and 9 from Jhapa, Chitwan, Parsa, Rupandehi, Parbat, Dailekh and Bajura districts.
