Man held for holding a Nepali to ransom in Malaysia

KATHMANDU: Police have arrested a man on the charge of holding a Nepali national in Malaysia to ransom.

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday arrested Durga Bahadur Shrestha alias Devid, 44, of Sundarpur in Morang district for kidnapping Madham Raidas of Dang’s Paharwa and extorting Rs 1.6 million rupees to release him.

CIB spokesperson SP Bel Bahadur Pandey said that Durga Bahadur Shrestha abducted Raidas, a migrant worker in Malaysia with the help of his wife Dhanmaya Shrestha and driver Shyam Nepali, and held him hostage for seven days.

Raidas was held hostage for seven days and his wife called him and threatened to kill him if he did not deposit Rs 60,000 Malaysian Ringgit at a Himalayan Bank account.

Raidas was set free only after his wife repeatedly deposited Rs 1.592 million at the aforementioned bank account. Durga Bahadur even took Raidas’ passport in his possession and did not allow him to come to Nepal.

While investigating the case on the basis of the victim’s wife’s complaint, the police had received secret information that Durga Bahadur had come to Nepal.

According to SP Pandey, he was arrested near Kanti Children’s Hospital in Kathmandu on September 30.  SP Pandey said that an investigation into the case is underway.
