Parliamentary committee asks if 50k NGOs are necessary for Nepal



The Women and Social Committee under the House of Representatives (HoR, has directed the Social Welfare Council to review its policy regarding the Non-governmental organizations (NGO).

The committee meeting today has asked the SWC whether 50 thousand NGOs were necessary in the country as about 50 thousand NGOs were registered in the SWC.

The committee has directed to review following its standards, capacity and relevancy of such mushrooming NGOs in the country.  “Renew and other monitoring aspects had troubles to look after these NGOs’ activities smoothly”, the committee said.

The committee also said that once registered NGOs that were not renewed were also not terminated.

The committee issuing a directive has asked the SWC why not such not registered NGOs were still in operation.

The committee has also pointed out most of these NGOs were not found working as per the need of the particular issues and places.  The committee Chair  Niru Devi Pal directed the SWC  to submit its report with transparent activities of the NGOs as such was not found in different issues including plan, programs and renting of the offices as well.
