NRCS’ blood transfusion service completes 54 years



KATHMANDU: Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) has collected 238 thousand 836 units blood and provided 321 thousand 776 unit blood and platelets to patients in fiscal year 2019/20.

This is stated in a report published today on the occasion of NRCS’s blood transfusion service center completing 54 years of its service.

Likewise, various organizations have collected blood by conducting 3.478 blood collection mobile camps while the Central Blood Transfusion Service alone has collected 39 thousand 755 units blood in the fiscal year 2019/20.

The blood transfusion service was started in Nepal on July 27, 1966.

NRCS has been providing services from the 116 blood transfusion service centres and units in 73 districts of the country.

Besides the Central Blood Transfusion Service in Kathmandu, NRCS has four regional blood transfusion service centres, namely in Biratnagar, Pokhara, Nepalgunj and Chitwan. It has 22 district-level units, emergency blood transfusion service in 47 districts and blood transfusion service units in 38 hospitals.

NRCS’ communications director Divya Raj Poudel said the NRCS is celebrating the service establishment day without holding any assembly or gathering at different places due to the risk of COVID-19 this year.

A blood donation camp, a program for honoring the blood donors and launching the Annual Report would be held at the Central Blood Transfusion Service Center on the occasion, he said.

Meanwhile, an emergency blood transfusion service is launched at Ratnanagar Hospital Chitwan today on the occasion.
