241 ‘chhaugoths’ demolished in Dailekh



DAILEKH: A total of 241 chhaugoths have been demolished in different parts of the Dailekh district.

The demolishment efforts have been made out as per the government’s campaign of getting rid of chhaugoths, also called as menstruation huts where menstruating girls, women and new mothers are compelled to stay there for five to seven days, in Nepal’s far western districts.

According to Police Inspector Nain Bahadur Saud, a total of 112 chhaugoths have been demolished in Athbis municipality.

Likewise, 58 chhaugoths have been demolished in Bhaiaravi rural municipality, 20 in Chamunda Bindrasaini municipality, 13 in Dullu municipality, three in Gurans rural municipality, among others.

The campaign was started in the district after a series of interactions and discussions on the elimination of this practice in all the 11 local levels of the district.

Chhaugoths, however, have not yet been demolished in Thantikandh rural municipality, Bhagawati rural municipality, Mahabu rural municipality and Naumule rural municipality.
