Central Committee meeting of Prachanda-Nepal faction begins

Likely to pick Surendra Pandey as General Secretary

KATHMANDU: A meeting of the Central Committee of the Prachanda-Nepal faction of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) is underway at a banquet in Kathmandu on Thursday.

A Standing Committee meeting of the faction was also held before the Central Committee meeting.

Leader Beduram Bhushal informed that the meeting discussed appointing General Secretary, recognizing the Secretariat, and protest plan against the move of Prime Minister KP Oli to dissolve the House of Representatives.

Five leaders are in the fray for the post of General Secretary. Names of Narayankaji Shrestha, Surendra Panday, Bhim Rawal, Janardan Sharma, and Barshaman Pun have been proposed.

Surendra Pandey is likely to become the General Secretary of the Prachanda-Nepal faction through the CC meeting today.

Today’s CC meeting will fix the rank of the two chairpersons and appoint a general secretary to the faction, sources have said.

In its CC meeting held yesterday, the Prachanda-Nepal group appointed Pushpa Kamal Dahal as its Parliamentary Party leader by ousting Oli.

Both the factions – Oli and Prachanda-Nepal – of the ruling NCP have intensified meetings and appointments claiming the legitimacy of the party even though it is yet to split officially.

The Supreme Court will decide the fate of the factions of the ruling NCP and the dissolution of the House of Representatives on Friday.
