Parties’ reluctance to face fresh election is questionable: PM Oli

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Oli has raised concern over some “democratic” parties’ reluctance to face the people during the upcoming general elections.

“I can’t understand why some political parties believing in democratic exercises are against my decision to announce fresh polls,” PM Oli said in a television interview with senior journalist Jibram Bhandari on Wednesday evening.

“The elections dates had to be announced by dissolving the House of Representatives as I felt that the remaining two (out of the five) years of government will be wasted as some inside the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) were hell-bent on toppling the government,” he said adding, “The government was entrapped from all sides and was not allowed to work.”

Therefore, he said, it would be wise to go for a fresh mandate by announcing the polls.

Responding to a query about why Nepali Congress, the main opposition party, was protesting the government’s decision to go for fresh polls, PM Oli said NC, being a democratic party, must and will participate in the upcoming elections.

“In fact, to tell you the truth, NC Senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel does not want to face the election as he is pretty sure of losing the election from his constituency,” PM Oli said while referring to Poudel’s strong objection to PM Oli’s decision to dissolve the House of Representatives and go for polls.

PM Oli also lambasted some of the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) leaders for obstructing his government to function as per the aspiration of the people.

“Do I need to tell you how the government was entrapped?” he queried refuting allegations that the government has failed in all aspects.

He said that conspiracies were hatched against the government and the Prime Minister within the NCP and outside. “To tell you the truth, they were hell-bent on ousting me from both the positions – Prime Minister and party Chairman.”

Prime Minister Oli also said they (his party-men) also tried to impeach the President to fulfil their vested interest.

“Allegations that the government has failed to deliver are pure rumors and aimed at tarnishing the image of a democratically-elected government,” he added.

The Prime Minister also criticized the opposition party leader for not cooperating with the government to fill the vacant positions in the constitutional bodies. “I cannot appoint officials at the constitutional bodies alone without the presence of the leader of the main opposition party, Speaker and others,” he said adding, “They tried to hinder the process by not attending the meeting of the Constitutional Council.”
