KATHMANDU: Human casualties resulting from traffic accidents have decreased nearly 38 per cent in the Kathmandu Valley in recent period, the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD) said.
MTPD stated that 254 people had died and 241 had sustained injuries in traffic accidents in fiscal year 2018/19 whereas 152 people died and 85 were injured in traffic accidents in fiscal year 2019/20.
The Division said 50 people have died in traffic mishaps so far in the current fiscal year 2020/21.
It is stated that 10 thousand vehicles met with accidents in the previous fiscal year while 2,600 vehicles have met accidents till now in the current fiscal year.
The Division attributed the decline in traffic accidents to the various programs, including the road safety program adopted in traffic management aspect.
Similarly, less number of vehicular traffic on the road due to the risk of COVID-19 has also contributed to lessening the traffic accidents.
MTPD stated in a press note it issued on Monday that new plans have been implemented through continuous coordination with the stakeholders to reduce traffic accidents and to make the traffic management effective.
It mentioned the use of technology, intensified action against over-speed and reckless driving and other traffic offenses, and determination of the time for operating tippers has helped reduce the accidents.
According to MTPD, action has been taken against 442 thousand 466 vehicles and revenue Rs 287 million 177 thousand has been collected in lieu of fine against these vehicles.
Similarly, 8,704 taxi drivers have faced action for cheating passengers under what is called the ‘sweep operation’ conducted by the Traffic Police during this period. RSS
