Snow Leopard bidden adieu with state honors



KATHMANDU: The funeral rites for famous mountain climber Ang Rita Sherpa has been performed with state honors.

His last rites was performed at Teku in the Bagmati River as per the Buddhist tradition after an Armed Police Force (APF) squad offered him a guard of honor.

Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Yogesh Bhattarai paid tribute to Sherpa by draping a national flag on his body kept at Sherpa Gumba Bouddha on behalf of the government.

A cabinet meeting on Tuesday had decided to perform Sherpa’s funeral rites with state honors.

Ten-time Mt Everest climber without oxygen, Sherpa passed away at his Jorpati-based residence at 10 am on Monday.

Born at Thame in Solukhumbu 72 years ago, the record holder Sherpa had been popularly known as ‘The Snow Leopard’.
