China denies encroaching Nepal’s land in Humla; border pillar missing

KATHMANDU: Border dispute between Nepal and China has resurfaced after it was revealed that China has allegedly constructed nine buildings on Nepali territory in Humla district.

The two buildings were allegedly built by China a few years ago. The Nepali side claims that there was a border pillar (Pillar No. 11) of Nepal and China at the place where the structures were built.

A seven-member team led by Humla Chief District Officer Chiranjeevi Giri had left to the site on Friday after receiving information that China was constructing the buildings.

District Security Committee chiefs and Namkha Rural Municipality Chief Bishnu Bahadur Lama reached Lapcha on Sunday.

During the discussions, the Chinese security officials claimed with the Nepali team that the lands belonged to China and the buildings were built on their land.

“We couldn’t locate Border Pillar No. 11,” Lama said, “In the absence of the pillar, it is not possible to say if the lands have been encroached or not.”

A recent inspection of the Lapcha-Limi region of Humla from August 30 to September 9 by Assistant Chief District Officer Dalbahadur Hamal of Humla had revealed that China has allegedly constructed nine buildings on the Nepali territory.

The Lapcha-Lipu region does not enjoy the presence of state because of its remoteness from the district headquarters.

District Administration Office Humla has reported about the encroachment to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), and the case has already been forwarded to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).
