Nomination filing for Speaker today

KATHMANDU: Filing of nominations for the election of the Speaker of the House of Representatives is taking place on Tuesday.

According to the schedule published by the Parliament Secretariat, candidates will file their nominations from 11 am to 2 pm today.

The Parliament has set the January 26 to elect the new Speaker.

Since the ruling Nepal Communist Party has already decided to field Agni Prasad Sapkota for the post, it is certain that Sapkota would be elected as the NCP holds the majority votes required for the election.

The post of Speaker has been lying vacant after former Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara resigned from the post on October 1 following rape charges against him by a female staff at the Parliament Secretariat.

Deputy Speaker Shiva Maya Tumbahamphe stepped down on Monday paving the way for the election of the new Speaker.
