KATHMANDU: The Gokarneshwor Municipality in the north-east of Kathmandu district has been providing free meals to 750 economically vulnerable workers daily.
Municipality spokesman Manoj Kumar Dhungana said they are feeding the needy people, most of them daily wage-earners, from the food grains and supplies collected from the donors.
“We distribute the food in packets from five places to avoid crowding to prevent coronavirus infection. The people are served at these places by maintaining physical distance,” he said.
The Municipality had distributed relief to the 10,500 workers and economically poor people in the second week of this month.
The Municipality started distributing free meals to the needy from the beginning of the third week of this month after the lockdown was extended and it became difficult to manage the relief distribution.
The free distribution of food to the needy would be continued until the lockdown is over, according to the Municipality’s spokesman.
This service has been started targeting particularly the carpet factory workers mostly in the Jorpati area and other needy people in the Municipality.
