KATHMANDU: Khabarhub, Nepal’s popular digital news portals (English and Nepali), have come under massive brute-force attack by using Amazon’s virtual network from last night possibly by Chinese hackers.

The hackers have been using all tools to take control of the Khabarhub site starting from a Hybrid brute-force attack.

Khabarhub has informed the cyber bureau of Nepal Police. The bureau has initiated an investigation to identify the attackers.

“We have taken this issue very seriously,” says SSP Nabinda Aryal, Spokesperson at the Cyber Bureau, Nepal Police, adding, “Our officers have initiated a detailed investigation into the issue.”

According to him, action will be taken against the culprits involved in such activities.

This is not the first time that Khabarhub has come under such attack, and this is the third of such massive attack on Khabarhub since February 2019 despite our robust cybersecurity system, measures and parallel server.

It should be noted that Khabarhub has exposed several Chinese illegal activities, its political interference and micromanagement carried out in Nepal.

Hackers have continued to attack Khabarhub’s site since the very beginning with an aim to destroy its data and system by disrupting services and trying to penetrate into the system, Khabarhub’s cyber expert has identified.

A brute-force attack is a cryptanalytic attack that can, in theory, be used to attempt to decrypt any encrypted data, according to Wikipedia.

Such an attack might be used when it is not possible to take advantage of other weaknesses in an encryption system (if any exist) that would make the task easier, it said.
