NCP Standing Committee decides to take disciplinary action against PM Oli

KATHMANDU: A meeting of the Standing Committee of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) has decided to take disciplinary action against Prime Minister KP Oli.

The meeting of the party Standing Committee held at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar on Sunday evening decided to take disciplinary action against PM Oli for taking “unconstitutional and undemocratic” steps endangering democracy, a leader said.

PM Oli had recommended the President to dissolve the House of Representatives on Sunday morning.

According to him, the meeting has also decided to convene a meeting of the central committee on December 22.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Oli and his close aides were absent from today’s meeting.

The meeting also decided to hold a nationwide protest against the dissolution of the parliament by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari on the recommendation of the Cabinet.

NCP Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, senior leaders Madhav Kumar Nepal, Jhalanath Khanal, among others attended the meeting.

Likewise, the meeting has also appointed former Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) Krishna Bahadur Mahara as Standing Committee member.

Mahara had renounced the party membership after being elected the Speaker.

He later resigned as the Speaker after rape allegations by a Parliament Secretariat staffer last year.

Meanwhile, it should be noted that Prime Minister Oli had earlier offered Vice-Chairman Bamdev Gautam to lead the party from the former UML group after Executive Chairman Prachanda and senior leader Madhav Nepal pressed him to quit.

Gautam had consulted with 14 central members close to him after his residence in Bhaisepati on Friday following the proposal from the Prime Minister and Chairman Oli.

The participants had suggested to Gautam to move ahead only if such package agreement is accepted by Executive Chairman Prachanda and senior leader Nepal.

Meanwhile, as many as 90 lawmakers representing the ruling NCP had registered a no-confidence proposal against PM Oli. They had proposed the name of Prachanda as the new Prime Minister.
