Birgunj Customs Office fails to meet revenue target, collects Rs 30 million in five months

BIRGUNJ: The Birgunj Customs Office has collected Rs 30 billion in revenue in the first five months of the current Fiscal Year 2020/21.

The customs has collected Rs 29.77 billion in the period from July/August to November/December this year.

Birgunj that is considered as the main customs on the basis of import and export transactions could not meet the revenue target.

Customs Officer Ramesh Sukmani said that 84 percent of the target has been achieved. Birgunj Customs was tasked to collect revenue of Rs 35.33 billion in five months.

The revenue has declined in the current fiscal year due to the decline in the import of fuel and vehicles, which are the main contributors to the revenue.

Imports have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic and the lockdown, according to customs.

Entrepreneurs say that despite the improvement in the last two months, the impact of the six-month shutdown has not been remedied.
