KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Health and Population has said coronavirus infection in Kathmandu has reached to a “dangerous point” amid surge in the coronavirus cases.

During a meeting of the Covid-19 Crisis Management Center (CCMC), a ministry official said the COVID-19 infection was spreading in the Kathmandu Valley and suggested Prime Minister KP Oli to take immediate action to contain the pandemic virus.

Prime Minister Oli had sought suggestions on the current situation and the steps to be taken by the government in the future. Health officials said there were signs of infection at the community level in some districts, including in Kathmandu.

A senior ministry official said that he has suggested taking serious steps now. He said, “The infection has been spread rapidly. This indicates danger situation in the family”.

The death and infection rates from coronavirus across the country have doubled in the past 18 days.

In Kathmandu, the infection rate has doubled in just eight days, and continues to grow.

Due to the unorganized settlement of Kathmandu and the population density here, there is a high risk of infection, which could lead to a catastrophic situation, the ministry said.

Elsewhere in the country, the death rate from COVID-19 in the country is 0.4. But the death rate in Kathmandu has reached 0.6.

Likewise, 1 percent of people over the age of 60 across the country were infected.

The meeting emphasized that contact tracing should be made efficient in Kathmandu Valley. It is also suggested that more isolation centers need to be increased.

The COVID-19 cases have been entered to the community transmission in major cities of different districts including Kathmandu.

Infections with symptoms have been on the rise for over a month. Many complications are being added to the infected persons. That is why the death toll is rising in the recent days.
