Foreign daughter-in-law to acquire naturalized citizenship after 7 yrs

KATHMANDU: Nepal Communist Party (NCP) has set a seven-year time limit for a daughter-in-law from a foreign country to qualify for a naturalized citizenship of Nepal.

An NCP Secretariat meeting held this morning decided to this effect.

Talking to journalists following the meeting, NCP Spokesperson Narayan Kaji Shrestha said when a foreign girl ties the knot with a Nepali boy, she has to stay in Nepal for at least seven years to acquire a naturalized citizenship.

Besides, she has to submit a certificate showing that she has relinquished the citizenship of the country of her birth.

“The NCP Secretariat meeting came up with the decision that a foreign girl who gets married with a Nepali boy has to stay for seven years to qualify for a naturalized citizenship of Nepal. She has to submit a document showing that she relinquished the citizenship of the country of her birth,” said Shrestha.

NCP had consulted with some of its leaders and lawmakers of State Affairs Committee of the Parliament on Friday and with Nepali Congress on Thursday regarding this issue.

The State Affairs and Good Governance Committee of the House of Representatives had given a five-day deadline to forge consensus on Wednesday.
