China holds military drill as US envoy visits Taiwan

BEIJING: China is conducting military exercises near the Taiwan Strait to what it said “protect its sovereignty” as a top US official visits Taiwan.

The drills take place amid the escalating tensions between Washington and Beijing.

Keith Krach is the highest-level official from the US State Department to visit Taiwan in decades, according to BBC.

China’s Defense Ministry Spokesman Ren Guoqiang alleged the US and Taiwan of “stepping up collusion, frequently causing disturbances”.

He said that “using Taiwan to control China” or “rely on foreigners to build oneself up” was just a “wishful” thinking.

Krach, who is the US undersecretary of economic affairs, will also meet Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen later today.
