Helambu Rural Municipality requests to halt work of Melamchi Project

MELAMCHI: Helambu Rural Municipality in Sindhupalchowk district has requested the concerned authority to temporarily halt the construction of the Melamchi Drinking Water Project in view of prevention of outbreak of COVID-19.

Since the materials for the much-awaited project have to be ferried to the construction site through this rural municipality, the locals here were worried about contracting the deadly infection as the vehicles continued moving through their locality.

The laborers, amid the lockdown, had returned to work at the Melamchi Water Project in the first phase of the lockdown after the government had allowed operation of the mega-project by meeting the stipulated health standards.

Rural Municipality Chair Nimal Gyalzen Sherpa shared that vehicles related to the water project were barred from entering their rural municipalities after the circulation from the District Administration Office, Sindhupalchowk on last Wednesday. The move was made in a bid to contain the spread of the deadly infection.

People’s movement in the rural municipality has been prohibited while the rural municipality has forbidden its staffers to travel out of their rural municipalities unless contingency or any important works.
