COVID-19 kills 2,816 in Europe, 7,164 across world



KATHMANDU: The number of deaths from the coronavirus has increased in an alarming rate in European countries, of late.

The coronavirus has already spread to 24 European countries, claiming lives of 2,816 people.

Of the total 7,164 deaths as of Monday evening, the European continent recorded the highest number of deaths with 2,816 people after China.

Despite closure of border checkpoints on all the EU member states, the spread of the novel virus has gone unabated.

‘Lockdown’ clamped in Italy

Italy is the worst-hit country in the European continent. Despite lockdown the country has clamped on, the spread of the novel virus has gone unabated. As many as 349 people have died in the last 24 hours due to the novel virus and the infection is also increasing in an alarming rate.

With the new deaths, the total death toll in Italy has climbed to 2,158.

The number of those infected with the virus has reached 27,980 in Europe. The condition of 1,851 among those 23,073 undergoing treatment is critical while 2,749 have returned home after treatment.

Likewise, a total of 342 have died in Spain,  148 in France, 55 in Britain, 24 in the Netherlands, 19 in Switzerland, 17 in Germany, 10 in Belgium, 7 each in Sweden, San Marino, 4 each in Denmark, Greece and Poland, and 3 each in Austria and Norway.

Similarly, two people have died in Ireland and Bulgaria one each in Portugal, Slovenia, Luxemburg, Albania, Azerbaijan and Ukraine as of Monday evening.

The coronavirus which first broke out in Chinese Wuhan City on December 31 has been taking toll on human life after the preventive measures failed to stop the deadly virus.
