Coronavirus kills 4,020, infects 151, 374 in SAARC region; 45, 607 recover

KATHMANDU: Coronavirus has claimed 4,020 people in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) region as of Saturday morning.

According to the latest figures collated by Worldometer, 2,753 died in India, 803 in Pakistan, 298 in Bangladesh, 153 in Afghanistan, nine in Sri Lanka and four in the Maldives, taking the tally to 4,020 in the SAARC member states. Meanwhile, 45, 607 people have recovered after treatment.

Even though the infection cases are rising in Nepal and Bhutan of late, no deaths have been reported in these countries so far.

India, the worst-hit among SAARC member states, comes fourth in Asia with the highest number of deaths. Iran is the worst-hit with 6, 902 deaths in Asia followed by China with 4, 633. Similarly, 4,055 died in Turkey (3rd), and 2,753 in India (fourth).

India

The death toll in India from Coronavirus has reached 2,753 as of Saturday morning after 104 died in the last 24 hours.

With 3,787 new cases, the number of infection cases has climbed to 85,784. Currently, 52, 773 are undergoing treatment at various hospitals in the country while 30,258 have returned home.

Pakistan

Pakistan, the second worst-hit in the SAARC region, has witnessed 803 deaths so far while 37, 218 have been infected. The number of deaths surged to 803 after 33 more died as of Saturday morning.

With 1,430 new cases, the number of infection cases has reached 37, 218 in Pakistan. Currently, 26, 260 are undergoing treatment, while 10,155 have recovered after treatment.

Bangladesh

The death toll from the Coronavirus in Bangladesh has climbed to 298, with 20, 065 infected, so far. Currently, 15, 885 are undergoing treatment at various hospitals in the country, of which 3, 882 have recovered.

Afghanistan

Afghanistan has reported 153 deaths and 6, 053 people have been infected as of Saturday morning. Currently, 5, 155 are undergoing treatment at various hospitals while 745 have recovered home after treatment.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has reported nine deaths and 935 infection cases as of Saturday morning.  Currently, 449 are undergoing treatment while 477 have returned home after recovery.

Nepal

Nepal has reported 267 infection cases after 18 new cases were reported. Currently, 231 are undergoing treatment while 36 have recovered after treatment.

Maldives

The death toll in the Maldives has reached four while 1,031 have been infected from the Coronavirus so far. Currently, 978 people are undergoing treatment at various hospitals in the country, of which 49 have recovered.

Bhutan

Bhutan is the least affected country in the SAARC region.

Bhutan has reported 21 infection cases. Five among those infected with the novel virus have recovered after treatment while 16 are undergoing treatment at the hospital.
