Administration orders arrest of Durga Prasai on defamation charges

KATHMANDU: The District Administration Office, Bhaktapur has ordered the arrest of Durga Prasad Prasai, the operator of B&C Hospital in Birtamod of Jhapa district on misdemeanor charges.

Vice-chairman of the Medical Education Commission Sri Krishna Giri had on Tuesday lodged a case of defamation and misdemeanor against Prasai after the latter accused him of demanding Rs 200 million in bribe to start the affiliation process for his medical college.

Giri had approached the administration alleging Prasai of ‘defaming’ him and ‘making false allegations’.

The Bhaktapur District Administration had ordered the District Police Office, Bhaktapur to arrest Prasai. Police had reached his Bhaktapur-based residence in line with the order.

But Prasai was not in his house when they reached, police said.

Earlier on Monday, Prasai had lodged a complaint at the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) and the Department of Money Laundering Investigation against Giri.

It should be noted that Prasai had on January 8 organized a press conference alleging Giri of demanding bribe from him.

According to Prasai, he had reached the Medical Education Commission on December 1 seeking affiliation of B&C with an application. He had also alleged Giri of calling him at Dwarika’s Hotel in Battisputali and asked for a bribe of Rs 200 million.
