HONG KONG: At least seven Nepali people were killed and several others injured after a fire broke out in a Nepali restaurant in Hong Kong on Sunday night.
Four men and three women, aged nine to 40, died after the blaze ripped through the flat in a tenement building near the junction of Canton Road and Saigon Street in Yau Ma Tei.
Talking to Khabarhub, Shaktaman Budhathoki, the secretary of Baglung Society Hong Kong, the fire broke out while celebrating the birthday of life-time member Raj Kandel’s son.
Budhathoki said four members from Baglung Society Hong Kong member Krishna Kandel’s family, three members from Raj Kandel and three members from his younger sister were involved in the incident.
“The incident took place while celebrating birthday of Raj Kandel’s son,” said Budhathoki, adding, “Krishna Kandel is undergoing treatment at the ICU of Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
Three men and four women were said to be in a critical condition in hospital. Two others were in a serious condition. One person was stable in hospital and another was discharged, according to local media reports.
The injured were taken to Kwong Wah and Queen Elizabeth hospitals in Yau Ma Tei, Caritas Medical Centre in Sham Shui Po, and Princess Margaret Hospital in Kwai Chung.
The fire broke out at around 8 pm (according to local time), the deadliest in Hong Kong in almost a decade.
The flat was engulfed in flames. Firefighters brought the blaze under control in about half an hour but it was not until 10.41pm that it was finally put out.
Earlier, in 2011, nine people were killed and 34 injured in a fire that ripped through Fa Yuen Street in Mong Kok.
