KATHMANDU: A writ petition has been filed at the Supreme Court calling for releasing as per the law the inmates given the chances of coronavirus infection in prisons due to overcrowding.
The writ was jointly filed on Tuesday by Gopal Shivakoti, Ram Sharma, Man Bahadur Rawat, Khim Bahadur Rana, Badri Kumar Thapa, Om Prakash Poudel and Prakash Ojha. The petition states that inmates more than the accommodation capacity have been kept in prisons.
Likewise, the petition has sought the Supreme Court’s order on provision of facilities to the senior citizens and to make initiatives for including provisions of clemency in the constitution and for issuing orders for releasing inmates kept under detention for remand on the condition of being present before the court on appointed date, among others.
