Indian Embassy marks 74th Independence Day

KATHMANDU: Indian Embassy in Kathmandu has organized a function to mark the 74th Independence Day of India and its seven-decade-long diplomatic ties on Saturday.

Held on the premises of the Nepali Embassy in Kathmandu, the program was attended by Indian diplomats and was live-streamed for Indians living in Nepal, and friends of India in Nepal and media, the Embassy twitted.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has also extended greetings and congratulated his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi on the occasion of 74th Independence Day of India.

Posting a Twitter message this morning, Prime Minister Oli congratulated Indian Prime Minister Modi and the people of India, wishing them peace, progress and prosperity on the happy occasion of the 47th Independence Day.

Amid congratulations being poured in on the occasion of the 74th Independence Day, social media users have also vented their ire over the concerned side’s failure to take action against the news full of hatred towards Nepal.

Extending best wishes on the 74th Independence Day of India, social media user Jyoti Panday questions, “Regarding Nepal and India relations, your  news and social networking sites are full of hatred towards Nepal, what actions are you taking to control over such rubbish that is tarnishing our valuable relationship?”

The two countries established diplomatic relations on 17 June 1947. The relationship between the two countries has soured of late after the Nepal government  issued an updated map of Nepal including disputed territories — Kalapani, Limpiyadhura and Lipu Lekh.

According to a highly-placed source at the Office of the Prime Minister, the Nepal government is preparing to initiate talks at the diplomatic level with the southern neighbor to sort out border disputes starting today.

India is celebrating its 74th Independence Day on Saturday (15th of August, 2020) to mark the historic occasion when the largest democratic country gained independence from the British empire in the year 1947.
