Cross-border supply of small arms pose security threat in Tarai

SARLAHI: Small and light weapons pose a security threat in the Tarai-Madhes districts including Sarlahi which share borders with India.
Such weapons are easily available in markets along the border areas, and they are used in criminal offences.
District Police Office, Sarlahi’s Chief and Superintendent of Police Bishwamani Pokhrel said groups of Indians and Nepalis enter the district possessing illegal arms and it has caused criminal activities in the Terai regions.

Suppliers and carriers of arms take an undue advantage of open border to see the business flourish in the Nepali market, according to him. ”We are strictly monitoring the border area, but smugglers find this or that way to do the business.”

Illegal arms are openly sold in the Indian markets along the border area which increases a security threat to the people in both countries.

They are used in murder, abduction and looting. The issue is frequently raised in the border security meetings as well. The Indian security officials are expressing commitment to control the cross-border supply of illegal arms, it is said.

Sarlahi Chief District Officer Mohan Raj GC termed the cross-border supply of small arms a grave security challenge and to combat this was really challenging.
