Five companies face music for manufacturing toxic hand sanitizers



KATHMANDU: Five industries have been found producing hand sanitizers laced with toxic chemicals in the Kathmandu Valley.

The harmful chemicals were detected in the hand sanitizers manufactured by four companies from Kathmandu and one from Bhaktapur during tests at the laboratory of Department of Drug Administration.

According to the officials at Department of Drug Administration, those involved in producing hand sanitizers breaching the standards are Hygiene Soap and Chemical P. Ltd., Adhar Chemical and Food Industry, Search Came Come Herbal Products and Suryamukhi Herbal Products Company from Kathmandu and Nepal Kayakalpa Udhyog from Bhaktapur.

The Department has said products such as Instant Hand Sanitizer, Instant Hand Sanitizer Original, Advanced Hand Sanitizer, Instant Hand Sanitizer Refreshing Gel and Suryamukhi Hand Sanitizer contain harmful chemicals and advised people not to use them.

Toxic chemical called methanol was found during the test which is harmful to the health of human beings.

The department has said preparations are underway to take necessary action against these companies for producing harmful hand sanitizers.
