Brigadier General Baniya picked as UNMIS Sector Commander



KATHMANDU: The United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) has appointed Brigadier General of Nepal Army Dipak Baniya to the post of Sector Commander.

The Sector Commander is the third highest position after Force Commander and Deputy Force Commander in UNMIN in South Sudan.

As many as 2,000 peace-keeping forces including officials from Nepal Army and Armed Police Force are currently working in South Sudan.

A total of 22,000 peace-keeping forces from various peacekeepers contributing countries are working with UNMIS.

Baniya, who has been picked as the Sector Commander of UNMIS is the Brigade Commander of 24 Brigade based in Jumla under Nepal Army.

UNMIS has five sectors including North, East, West, South and Juwa.

Earlier, Brigade Commander Nain Raj Dahal had served as the Sector Commander in South Sudan two years ago.

Peacekeepers from a total of 122 peacekeepers contributing countries have been working in 12 war-torn countries across the world, at the request of the United Nations, currently.
