NEW DELHI: The US national security adviser Robert O’Brien has said time has come to accept that dialogue and agreements will not persuade Beijing to change its ways and it will no longer do to look the other way, international media reports have said.
He was indicating it might be necessary to confront China.
O’Brien said the time has come to accept that dialogue or agreements will not persuade China to change.
Nothing will be gained from looking the other way or turning the other cheek, he said adding that they have been doing that for far too long.
The statement comes days before another round of talks between India and China in Ladakh, scheduled for October 12.
Meanwhile, India and the US are also holding the next round of ‘2+2’ meeting between foreign and defense ministers on October 26-27 in New Delhi.
He added that Beijing’s territorial aggression is apparent on its Indian border.
His comments coincide with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s statement that said India was facing a 60,000 troop build-up in eastern Ladakh.
Pompeo was speaking after attending the second Quad ministerial meeting in Tokyo last week.
“Indians are seeing 60,000 Chinese soldiers on their northern border,” Pompeo was quoted as saying after returning from Tokyo.
Likewise, O’Brien further stated that the US had strengthened its partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region.
“One important partnership which will be one of the most key partnerships for the US in the 21st century, India, is thriving,” The Times of India has quoted him as saying.
