Kathmandu Metropolis demands ban on street vendors

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City has demanded that the vendor shops and stalls should be banned as a measure to check the wide-spreading coronavirus pandemic.

Deputy Mayor Hari Prabha Khadgi has submitted a memorandum to the Chief District Officer (CDO) of Kathmandu Janak Raj Dahal seeking a ban on the street vendors.

She has argued that the risk of coronavirus pandemic spread has become very high due to the crowd and reckless behaviour of both the shopkeepers and their customers.

Deputy Mayor Khadgi cited that the shoppers and the people hovering around there are unorganized and have the least chance of abiding by the health standards set by the administration, hence, should be banned.

The administration has shown a soft gesture towards the business from Thursday and has permitted the operation of vendor shops up to 11 am and from 4-7 pm.
