KATHMANDU: Minister for Foreign Affairs Pradeep Gyawali told the parliament that the construction of a Link Road by India to Lipu Lekh Pass of Nepal via Nepal’s territory was unfortunate, and has drawn the government’s serious attention.
Speaking at Sunday’s meeting of the Parliament, Minister Gyawali said the construction of the road runs against the understanding reached between the two countries at the level of Prime Ministers that a solution to boundary issues would be sought through negotiation.
He also read out the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs while claiming that Lipu Lekh and Kalapani fall under Nepal’s territory and will be resolved through dialogue with the Indian side.
Minister Gyawali said India had designed the project in 1999 and endorsed in 2005. However, the construction works began in 2008, and was expedited with Narendra Modi’s election in the year 2014.
Minister Gyawali said the government wants to resolve border disputes with India by keeping the principle of sovereign equality and the interest of nation at the center.
He said that the Kali River which originates in Limpiyadhura is the real origin of the Mahakali river and historic documents, map, facts, Sugauli Treaty and other documents are the evidences supporting this fact.
