5-magnitdue earthquake rattles Northeast India

ASSAM: A 5.0 magnitude earthquake hit Assam, but there were no reports of injuries or major property damage.

Strong tremors were felt across Northeast India and in West Bengal, Indian media reported.

It was not immediately known where the epicenter of the earthquake was but reports indicate it was in Bongaigaon, Assam.

The initial magnitude reported was 5.0 on the Richter Scale.

The epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 636 km above sea level. Tremors were felt in parts of Sikkim and Bhutan as well.
