Only few lost children are found, states NHRC report

KATHMANDU: Children of Nepal are in a very vulnerable situation, shows a report ‘Situation of Human Rights in Nepal-2076’.

The report released on Monday by Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Anupraj Sharma, stated that very few children who are lost are found.

Out of complaints filed at Children Search Centre, saying 2,481 children were lost till mid-April 2018/19, only 1,224 were found, reads the report.

As per the data of 11 districts kept by Nepal Police, a total of 3,332 people were rescued and returned from India in the last fiscal year. Of them, 46 percent were women and 14 percent children.

As per the report of the Central Child Welfare Board, out of 2,330 children lost in the last fiscal year, only 44 percent children were found. Of the lost children, 60 percent were girls.

NHRC Chair Sharma said children in the country are at a vulnerable situation and the state should protect homeless children. He said, “It is the responsibility of the nation to protect the rights of children, future of the nation.”

‘Some 1.1 million children are stunted due to malnutrition in the country”, stated the report, adding that 28 percent of schools lack separate toilets for students.
