Community level COVID-19 testing begins in Nepalgunj

NEPALGUNJ: The scope of testing for coronavirus has been expanded in Nepalgunj, after the Sub-metropolis was declared a prohibited zone.

Swab samples are being collected from today in the community affected by the infection, said corona focal person at the District Health Office Naresh Shrestha.

All the suspected persons will be tested based on a contact tracing, Shrestha said.

Meanwhile, chief of Bheri Hospital in Nepalgunj Dr Prakash Thapa said the situation is alarming as the transmission is now at the community level. “The entire area needs to be sealed off and everyone tested,” he said.

The first person found infected in Nepalgunj had returned from neighboring India on March 23.

A resident of DSP road in Nepalgunj-8, the person visited the local mosque for prayers and also went from home to home giving tuition classes to children in the locality.

So far 94 persons who came in contact with the infected person have been traced and their swab collected for testing. Of them, 23 tested positive and the report of others are awaited.

Those who tested positive have been admitted to the Corona hospital in Khajura, focal person Shrestha said.
