Coronavirus death toll soars to nearly 500

KATHMANDU: The coronavirus outbreak has killed 492 people worldwide, the majority of which are in China, and infected more than 24,500 people across 25 countries, CNN reported.

The reported said close to 60 million people remain under lockdown in China, with three cities reporting over a thousand confirmed cases.

Meanwhile, around 3,700 people are being held on a ship in Japan after a passenger who had departed the vessel tested positive for the virus.

Tuesday’s deaths were all in Hubei, the province where the virus is thought to have originated, but new infections are being confirmed across China and overseas.

China’s National Health Commission said the number of confirmed infections in the country rose to 24,324 after an additional 3,887 people were diagnosed with the virus.

As many as 180 cases of coronavirus have been detected in the people outside China, with one death in the Philippines.

World Health Organization (WHO) has already declared coronavirus as the global health epidemic.
