Overcrowding has become a problem in Jaleshwor jail

JALESHWOR: The Jaleshwor Prison serving as confinement for Mahottari, Dhanusha and Sarlahi districts has been undergoing a persistent problem of overcrowding.

The jail currently houses inmates four-fold more than its capacity.

According to the prison’s acting jailer Makasudan Mahaseth, the jail has a capacity to accommodate 135 people. However, the jail is currently accommodating a total of 532 inmates — 485 male, 43 female, and four dependent children.

Inmates are compelled to spend nights in a congested space, managing cooking, eating, bathing, among others.

The overcrowding has posed risks of infection of diseases.
