Growing cases of VAW a cause for concern: Minister Thapa

KATHMANDU: Minster for Home Affairs Ram Bahadur Thapa asserted that cases of violence against women (VAW) and domestic violence were on the rise in the wake of lockdown ordered to contain the spread of COVID-19 and it was certainly a cause of concern.

In the meeting of the National Concerns and Coordination Committee under the National Assembly held here today, Minister Thapa reaffirmed that the government was serious towards reducing the cases of oppression against the women and Dalits.

Thapa shared, “Like Women Cell, we are now mulling to form the Dalit Desk”.

On a different vein, the Minister argued that the increasing global warming caused by the wrong development policies of the industrial countries had contributed to the growing number of natural disasters every year.

He said that the government had already formulated necessary Acts and laws for disaster risk reduction.

In Nepal alone, around 1,000 persons have been losing their lives to natural disasters like flood, landslide, lightning and inundation among others annually on average.

The members of the Committee, on the occasion, recommended the government on the areas surrounding management of prisons and prisoners, motivation schemes for the medical persons and security personnel working in the forefront to aid the government’s fight against the deadly infection.

They also urged the Minister to put in place a system, wherein the victims of VAW could easily and safely file a complaint in the police station.
