KATHMANDU: Newly appointed Secretary-General of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Esala Ruwan Weerakoon, has assumed office.
The SAARC Secretariat in Kathmandu stated that Weerakoon, a Sri Lankan career diplomat, is the fourteenth Secretary-General of the eight-member regional block.
Weerakoon has succeeded Amjad Sial of Pakistan who returned home completing his three-year tenure in April.
Prior to his new diplomatic assignment, Weerakoon was the senior additional secretary to the President of Sri Lanka.
He has also served as the Foreign Secretary and Secretary at the Ministry of Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs of Sri Lanka.
Weerakoon, who holds MSc degree in Economics from the University of London, has also served as Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to India and Ambassador to Norway.
