The US political race and its enthusiasm in Nepali society

With a few hours day left until the Election Day in the United States, there has been enthusiasm all over, including in Nepal.

By tomorrow, either US President Donald Trump will continue to serve in the White House for another four more years, or the US will have Joe Biden as its new President.

There has been lot of enthusiasm to vote indicating that people, including a significant number of Nepali-origin voters in the United States, will definitely be exercising their rights.

It is evident that the political issues will spread the wave throughout the world and a portion of its extents can be felt in Nepal and the Nepali society as well.

As the US election is sure the domestic politics as well as its global role and foreign policy, the November election is sure to matter for South Asia, including Nepal amid strained relations between US and China.

There are several issues which are to be examined in this political decision. Yet, two significant issues, which Nepal and Nepali individuals have an enthusiasm for are: The migration strategy of the United States, and United States approach on China.

The migration policy of the United States:

In his first State of the Union location on January 30, 2018, Trump sketched out his organization’s four columns for migration change:

a. A way to citizenship for Dreamers

b. Expanded outskirt security financing

c. Ending the Diversity Visa lottery

d. Limitations on family-based migration.

The Four Pillars strengthen Trump’s mission motto to “Purchase American, Hire American”. This plainly shows his aggression on migration strategy.

Discussing the 2020 political race, according to NPR White House journalist Ayesha Rascoe and political reporter Asma Khalid, much of Biden’s movement plan bases on switching a noteworthy number of President Trump’s present strategies.

This reminds halting development for the fringe divider, completely disposing of the act of isolating migrant families at the U.S. outskirt and ending current restrictions on individuals from certain Muslim-lion’s share nations venturing out to the United States.

As for new approach usage, Biden says he will “modernize” the country’s migration foundation, vowing, on Day 1, to send enactment to Congress that would offer a pathway to citizenship for the assessed 11 million undocumented individuals in the nation.

He’s additionally required a ban on extraditions during the initial 100 days of his administration. Trump’s second-term plan on movement expands on the establishment he set in his initial term, outstandingly proceeding with development of the fringe divider, confining migration and contradicting purported metropolitan safe-havens, where neighborhood law authorization has restricted coordination with government movement officials.

Recently, in light of the progressing COVID 19 pandemic, Trump has fixed guidelines on lawful migration and global work travel to the U.S. by restricting the appropriation of visas, contending it will help support American business. The U.S. has additionally found a way to restrict individuals effectively acquiring haven.

American Policy on China:

As Nepal lies between India and China, it needs to be cautious about the activities going on in India and China.

India has a cordial relation with the US so it’ll not be an enormous issue from the Indian side, yet the cold relationship between the United States and China can have an adverse impact on Nepal.

During the Cold War period, America warmly greeted China by conceding to one-China strategy. Today, China’s rise has been quick and is in a competition with the US.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump’s administration has been aggressive towards China. One among them is the increasing tariff on Chinese merchandise, talking about autonomy of Tibet and Taiwan, and the military drills on South China Sea.

President Trump also held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korea leader Kim Jong Un.

Meanwhile, Joe Biden has blamed Trump for ‘harmony’ chats with Xi and being soft toward Russia. In the event that Trump wins, his administration will move towards resolving the strained relationship between China and America.

As the US election is sure the domestic politics as well as its global role and foreign policy, the November election is sure to matter for South Asia, including Nepal amid strained relations between US and China.

What is more significant is that the developments surrounding technology, trade, and supply chain restrictions will be watched.

Therefore, Nepal needs to refrain from engaging in the tension between the world powers and stick into our non-alignment policy.
