BIRGUNJ: Considering the risk posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Birgunj prison has released 17 inmates including two women. The release was made on Wednesday evening.

The inmates were released after freeing them of the remaining jail sentence, as per the Supreme Court order, said Jailer Shrawan Kumar Pokharel. The apex court has issued an order to release inmates with less than one year of a jail sentence.

Likewise, meetings of relatives and friends from outside with the prisoners have been completely stopped in order to prevent Coronavirus infection, Pokharel said.
